Artist Statement

My work grows from contradiction. The body minuscule, yet perception boundless.

Based in Taipei, I work with mineral pigments on paper and silk. Drawn from the earth, these pigments carry a will of their own. The final form of a painting emerges through negotiation between the pigments and me.

In the Night Atlas series, moths, orchids, and other unnameable forms surface and recede. Points of light are scattered across the picture plane; I connect them by intuition. It is an old impulse: to find order in darkness, to draw myth from scattered light. Constellations are not forms given by nature, but traces of projection. In my paintings, I make constellations of my own. Meaning is made, yet no less real for being made.

Forms appear, dissolve, and return, shifting vision from recognition towards sensation. A sense of being is slowly called into presence, in the making and in the viewing.

Shaped by close, sustained attention to small lives, tidal rhythms, and breath, my imagery resists clarity and asks for stillness.

These floating forms are what I leave behind, for myself and for the viewer: a moment in which meaning has just begun to surface, in a world where none was given.

(Luo-Han Chen)
